Rakesh Tikait was born on the 4th June 1969 in Sisauli (Mujaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh), India. His father Mahendra Singh Tikait, a farmer leader was also the cofounder and first president at BKU. His mother, Baljori Devi was a housewife.


Rakesh started his career as an officer in the Delhi Police Department in 1992. He left his job as a Delhi Police Department officer in 1992 and joined the Delhi farmer’s demonstration of 1993-1994. Soon he quit his job and joined the farmer’s demonstration as a BKU member in good standing. After Mahendra Singh Tikait’s death, he joined the BKU union. Soon he was the spokesperson of the Bharatiya Kisan Union.

Rakesh ran as a candidate for election to the UP assembly, using a ticket from the Indian National Congress from Khatauli. However, he was unable to win the election and finished in sixth place.

Rakesh ran again for Lok Sabha Election, this time on the ticket Rashtriya Lok Dal and Amroha Lok Sabha Constituency. He was not able to secure even 1%.
